Data Engineering

In this role, you will work as a member of the Data Engineering team to design, deploy, and maintain Hadoop while planning for the next generation of scalable & high performance systems. You will be responsible for all aspects of the Administration, and provide Guru-level leadership and expertise in the performance, scalability, high-availability, and capacity planning of the key components of the SurveyMonkey data infrastructure. You will work closely with developers, operations, DBAs, product managers, data analytics teams and other partners on projects from idea to implementation. This is a hands-on role with a lot of exploration opportunity and room to take on cool new projects.

The Role

Be part of a small team building and designing our big data analytics platform. Our analytics infrastructure is used to track upgrades, user behavior, user activity, and trends. We seek to measure everything to ensure we are making solid product & marketing decisions that enable us to enhance the customer experience and value.


You will be involved designing and developing big data software products that impact many areas of our business. You will help define requirements, craft software and data storage designs, implement code to these specifications, provide thorough unit and integration testing and support products while deployed and used by our customers.


Additionally you'll be able to dive deep into the details of customer problems and come up with scalable solutions that address customer needs.

Responsibilities

Some of the things you will do as a Big Data Developer at SurveyMonkey include:

  • Designing, implementing and supporting our Hadoop based data warehouse for our user interaction dataset
  • Translate complex functional and technical requirements into processes and code
  • Propose best practices/standards and implement them.
  • Mentor Junior Developers in Big Data development best practices.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge and experience with Hadoop, Spark and Hive
  • Good knowledge in back-end programming, specifically Python
  • Experience with version control and development best practices
  • Ability to write high-performance, reliable and maintainable ETL code
  • Good knowledge of distributed compute best practices

Extra Credit

  • Ability to read and tune Spark execution plans
  • Familiarity with workflow schedulers such as Airflow.
  • Good aptitude with concurrency concepts.
  • Familiarity with data loading tools like Flume or Gobblin
  • Familiarity with messaging systems like Kafka
  • Familiarity with Stream processing frameworks such as Spark Streaming
  • Experience with automated AWS provisioning and orchestration
  • Writing automated test harnesses for deliverables
